Phase outcome and project increment

Learning outcome

Operate Supabase as managed PostgreSQL with deliberate project, connection, pooling, dashboard, and environment boundaries.

Concrete deliverable

A Supabase project configured for TaskFlow development with documented connection paths and safe environment variables.

Trace the flow left-to-right for implementation and right-to-left for debugging. At every arrow, ask what data crosses the boundary and what proves it is trustworthy.
Instructor mental model

Principles to keep while coding

01

Treat Supabase Postgres as PostgreSQL first; managed services do not remove relational design responsibilities.

02

Separate connection details, credentials, and environment configuration from source code.

03

Understand pooling and connection limits before scaling application instances.

04

Use the Supabase dashboard as an operational tool, not as a substitute for migrations and repeatable schema changes.

Code-along path

Guided phase lab

Do these in order. Each step should end with evidence before the next one starts.

  1. 01

Create the project and record which values are public identifiers versus secrets.

  2. 02

Inspect the database with SQL editor and an external client so the dashboard is not the only access path.

  3. 03

Compare direct and pooled connection strings and document when each is appropriate.

  4. 04

Place connection information in environment files excluded from Git.

  5. 05

Test connectivity from the API environment and diagnose a deliberately incorrect host/port/password.

  6. 06

Document how local, staging, and production projects will remain separate.

Debugging studio

Failures you should know how to diagnose

Failure drill 1

Committing database credentials

Predict the symptom, capture evidence at the nearest boundary, change one variable, and verify the same reproduction after the fix.

Failure drill 2

Using the wrong connection mode for serverless/concurrent workloads

Predict the symptom, capture evidence at the nearest boundary, change one variable, and verify the same reproduction after the fix.

Failure drill 3

Treating dashboard clicks as schema migration history

Predict the symptom, capture evidence at the nearest boundary, change one variable, and verify the same reproduction after the fix.

Failure drill 4

Pointing preview environments at production data

Predict the symptom, capture evidence at the nearest boundary, change one variable, and verify the same reproduction after the fix.

Watch-order style

Lessons

The source chapters come first. Every phase now ends with a guided build, a debugging workshop, and an independent challenge so reading turns into transferable skill.

Use the exact connection string copied from the Supabase Connect dialog.
For local persistent development on IPv4-only networks, the Session pooler is a practical choice.
Use SSL. Do not expose the connection string to browser code.
